Mrs. Garber's Grades 4 & 5 Classes Celebrate Halloween

The spirit of Halloween was definitely in the air as goblins, ghosts, movie stars and characters of every kind filled the halls of our school. I couldn't resist the temptation to incorporate a little geography lesson into the Halloween fun.

Pumpkin Still Life

Grades 4 & 5 students used the technique of overlapping to show distance and perspective in these still life drawings.  Attention to light, shadow, colour, and texture helped the students achieve some very realistic results.

Fall Trees

Blowing Paint to Create Fall Trees

Students enjoyed creating a somewhat expressionistic style of art.  We began by making a water colour wash background using a selection of fall colours.  After drying the background, a  bit of watered-down acrylic paint and ink mixture was dropped near the bottom of the student's paper.  That's when the fun began, and the grade 4/5 art class used air pressure to "blow" a trunk and branches for their trees.  The finished paintings have added a warm autumn look to our hallways.

Got the Rhythm?

Hey Grades 4 & 5 Music Class,

We've been singing a variety of songs that have different rhythms.  Check out this video where the producer has created a variety of rhythms using falling objects.  Let me know what you think.

Alberta Culture Days Project

Alberta Culture Days

Grades 1-5  Celebrate Cultures of the World

Schools across Alberta were invited to recognize the many cultures of the world through art, drama, or music.  In response to this invitation our students participated in a school-wide art project.

To begin with a background of styro-foam was assembled. (Note to Self:  Do not assemble a large background in the classroom--Finished styro-foam background -8 X 8 ft. Classroom doorway-not 8 ft.)

Next an image of a globe was painted on paper.  The paper was then attached to the background. Art classes painted a variety of cultural masks in shades and tints of either green or blue.  Finally the masks were attached to mimic the continents and oceans of the world.  Alberta Culture Days are officially celebrated on Sept. 28-30.  Look for events in your surrounding communities and enjoy the varied cultures of our world!
Thanks for your participation students!

Shaving Cream Art

Shaving Cream Art Project

Using Shaving cream and paint, Grades 4 & 5 students created these marblized art folders.

First the students created a smooth layer of shaving cream on their desks, next they drizzled paint on top and mixed it around a bit.  Then they pressed their art folders into the mixture and lifted the folder carefully.  Next, the paint mixture was squeegeed off, and a marbled look was created.  Finally, decoratve letters were added to the folder.  Fantastic Work Grades 4 & 5!
